A gem-stone of the nesosilicate category of which there are 6 major and 9 sub varieties. Depending on the variety, the hardness varies from 6 - 7.5 on the Mohs scale. The general formula is X3Y2(SiO4)3 but the X and Y of the formula is exchanged to that of chemical composition that has become included, ie. Almandine - Fe3AI2Si3O12, Andradite - Ca3Fe2Si3O12, Pyrope - Mg3AI2Si3O12, etc.
The name Garnet comes from the Greek ‘granatus’ most possibly describing its colour and shape to that of pomegranate seeds but the colour ranges through red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, pink and colourless. Found in Austrailia, Brazil, China, Columbia, Greenland, India, Kazakstan, Madagascar, Namibia, Rajastthan, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and USA.
